Spring Break Thoughts…

As I head out to my FAVORITE island for a few days (Puerto Rico), I’ve been reflecting on the idea of “getting away.” Vacations are often framed as an escape—from work, from stress, from the constant demands of everyday life. And while stepping away from our routines can be deeply restorative, I’ve been thinking about the balance between taking a break and building a life we don’t feel the need to run from in the first place.

So many of us live in a state of chronic busyness, pushing through exhaustion while quietly counting down to the next vacation or long weekend. That escape mentality can become a signal that something in our daily rhythm needs attention. As a psychologist, I often talk with clients about this idea: rest shouldn’t only exist in occasional bursts. Ideally, the way we structure our lives includes regular space for breathing, reflection, and care for ourselves. I call these “nuggets.” We all need “nuggets” that nurture and sooth ourselves, or remind us what is important in our lives.

For me, this trip is less about escaping and more about returning—to presence, to my body, and to the parts of life that slow me down in a healthy way. I’m hoping for time in nature, moments on a yoga mat, ocean air, and long walks that help my nervous system recalibrate. There is something powerful about stepping into a new environment that reminds us how good it feels to move more slowly and to reconnect with the natural world. It also made me realize I desperately need a travel yoga mat!

And maybe that’s the deeper purpose of time away. Not just to escape our lives, but to remember what balance feels like so we can bring pieces of it back home with us. Putting an ocean sound machine in our bedroom, decorating our patio like our favorite lake or beach location, or buying new flowers and plants that remind you of your time away in paradise; these are all ways for us to connect with the “nuggets” on a daily basis that bring us meaning and joy. The goal isn’t a perfect, stress-free life—that’s not realistic for any of us. But it is possible to create a life that includes enough rest, meaning, and connection that we don’t feel like we’re constantly waiting for our next escape.

Till next time…claim your nuggets!

XOXOXO,

Amanda
